There are many online genealogies and published sources that conflict on whether Mary, daughter of Ralph Houghton, married Thomas Wilder or William Bentley. It is known through the births of their children that the two women are not the same person. Obviously they both can't be Mary Houghton.
When looking at the transcriptions of the Lancaster, Massachusetts, vital records, there is a marriage record with Mary Houghton as the name of the bride of Thomas Wilder. However the original record reportedly does not include Mary's maiden name. Ralph Houghton was the town clerk who recorded the marriage. It appears that the town clerk Ralph Houghton was incorrectly interpreted as Mary's father and her maiden name was incorrectly transcribed as Houghton.
The Dorchester, Massachusetts, vital records contain a marriage record for Mary Houghton and William Bentley. It appears that his is the daughter of Ralph Houghton. Other published sources state that the Mary who married Thomas Wilder was Mary Wheeler, daughter of Richard Wheeler. Mary Wheeler is the 9th great-grandmother of Kim Kardashian.
